About the role

Our client is hiring a Lead HTS Magnet Engineer to own the full lifecycle of high-performance high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet hardware, from architecture and design through testing, integration, and deployment. You’ll help establish and grow the company’s superconducting systems capability while developing technologies for mission-critical applications.

You’ll lead the design, characterization, modeling, and testing of advanced HTS magnet systems. That covers evaluation and architecture, electromagnetic and mechanical design, and thermal integration. HTS magnet development commonly involves REBCO coated-conductor tape, winding approaches such as no-insulation or partial-insulation coils, critical current characterization, joint design, and quench detection and protection, all within cryogenic systems cooled by cryocoolers or cryogens such as liquid nitrogen or helium.

Modeling is central to the role. You’ll develop and maintain advanced modeling capabilities for superconducting systems, including coupled electromagnetic, thermal, and structural analyses using tools such as COMSOL or ANSYS. You’ll run design trade studies and drive iterative development cycles that connect simulation, experimentation, and hardware, designing, fabricating, instrumenting, and testing prototypes and integrated systems along the way.

Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you’ll turn first-principles concepts into high-performance hardware. You’ll also support long-term technology strategy, including manufacturing approaches, supplier engagement, testing infrastructure, and planning for scale.

Main responsibilities
  • Lead the development of HTS magnet systems, including evaluation, architecture, electromagnetic and mechanical design, and thermal integration
  • Develop and maintain advanced modeling capabilities for superconducting systems, including coupled electromagnetic, thermal, and structural analyses
  • Design, fabricate, instrument, and test prototypes and integrated hardware systems
  • Conduct design trade studies and drive iterative development cycles connecting simulation, experimentation, and hardware implementation
  • Support long-term technology strategy, including manufacturing approaches, supplier engagement, testing infrastructure, and scalability planning
  • Contribute to the development of superconducting technologies for challenging operating environments
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience with superconducting systems, including HTS systems, magnet engineering, applied electromagnetics, cryogenic engineering, or related fields
  • Proficiency with finite element and multiphysics simulation tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS, or equivalent
  • Experience designing or evaluating superconducting structures subject to significant electromagnetic forces and demanding operating environments
  • Experience with test design and execution on superconducting systems
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency (green card)

Nice to have:

  • Experience with superconducting applications such as fusion energy, particle accelerators, pulsed power, magnets, or related technologies
  • Familiarity with cryogenic system design
  • Exposure to aerospace, space systems, defense, or other high-performance engineering environments
  • Experience in startup, advanced R&D, or rapidly evolving technology development environments
The offer
  • Based in San Diego, CA
  • Lead ownership of HTS magnet systems from architecture through deployment
  • The chance to help establish and grow a superconducting systems capability

This role suits an HTS magnet engineer who wants to own systems end to end and help build a superconducting capability from the ground up. If that sounds like you, apply below.
