Location: Los Angeles, CA / On-site / Hours: Monday-Friday, flexible / Salary: $160,000 – $210,000 + equity
About the role
Our client is an early-stage clean energy startup in Los Angeles. It’s hiring a Senior Turbomachinery Engineer to take hands-on ownership of the full lifecycle of its high-speed rotating machinery and high-pressure systems.
You’ll lead turbomachinery development, covering turbines, shafts, rotors, turbopumps, and related components, from design through prototype, analysis, testing, and validation. You’ll back up your designs with hand calculations and with FEA, thermal, structural, fatigue, and vibration analysis, primarily in ANSYS. High-speed rotating machinery of this kind typically also calls for rotordynamic analysis, including critical speeds and Campbell diagrams, careful bearing and seal selection, and an understanding of fluid behavior through blading and flow paths, often supported by CFD.
You’ll produce detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation to ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards. High-pressure systems are commonly designed with reference to codes such as the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. You’ll also work with the manufacturing team to make sure parts are made as designed.
After delivery, you’ll stay involved, giving technical guidance and making improvements as products are tested and used. At an early-stage startup, you’ll have real influence over how this technology develops.
Main responsibilities
- Own the full lifecycle of turbomachinery (turbines, shafts, rotors, turbopumps, and related components) and high-pressure systems, from design to prototype, analysis, testing, and validation
- Carry out hand calculations and FEA, thermal, structural, fatigue, and vibration analysis to validate designs
- Produce detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation
- Support the manufacturing team to make sure designs are built correctly
- Provide technical expertise after product delivery and make improvements where needed
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field
- 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience, leading the full lifecycle of turbomachinery and high-pressure systems
- Strong understanding of ASME principles, particularly ASME Y14.5
- Solid understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and other core mechanical engineering principles
- Extensive knowledge of FEA, thermal, structural, fatigue, and vibration analysis, including ANSYS
Nice to have:
- Experience working in a startup environment
The offer
- Salary: $160,000 – $210,000
